It was a little surprising to know that jobs are hard to come by in a top ranked university like U MICH….MS aspirants who have jobs in their minds after the degree might reconsider their options after reading this.

@marcus - you may be right that going after knowledge is more important than going after education. but i think you are talking about an ideal world. everyone wants knowledge, but everyone also wants to move up in life. and now everyone has the means to get there - now education is a pedestal - standing on which many people can get to where they want to - so there are many motivations for going for higher degrees - knowledge could certainly be one of them - but a large number of people also want better salary and better work environment..so this article was written keeping that in mind…

also - this was a first blush at doing such an analysis - keeping the complexities out - so only the most important aspects like salary, cost of living and tuition were included….

@priyanka - yes - not having work experience can definitely put you at a disadvantage wrt other candidates who do have more work experience…coz nowadays most of the people applying for MIS have work experience so you would meet stiff competition applying without work ex…

@charul - these days there are tough times ahead for people in any industry - at such times - the people with most secure jobs are domain experts in technology - so in that sense doing an MS in CS seems more prudent as there should be more opporunities there. having said that, people get software jobs after MIS from a good institute as well - and the thing is that if you are interested in program manager kind of profiles - you can do that after MS in CS as well…

Hi,

I am a bit confused in selecting the course which I should opt for MS. I want to be in the technical side and not much inclined to get into managerial side.
What are the job prospects after doing MS in CS and getting job here in India..and please highlight the same with MIS.

I am not able to decide what should I opt for CS or MIS ?

I have already got admits from two colleges for Spring 09 from California for MS in CS..but I deferred the admission for fall 09 and now I have an option to apply for some other colleges too..but m not sure should I apply for MS in CS, Software Engg or MIS or Information and Management.

I guess “Brand Value” is something which stays with you forever……..Imagine the impression the brand “IIT” creates…So I guess there is nothing wrong in shelling out some more money (if you can of course ) for the brand.
