How important is a statement of purpose in your application?
So many people tend to forget that apart from GRE and college grads, one thing that can make or break your application - is the Statement of Purpose. We spoke to Atul Kulkarni - who is currently pursuing a Masters in Computer Science at the University of Minnesota, Duluth. Atul talks about how honest recos and honest statement of purpose play such an important part in the applications. Here is Atul himself:
1. Which univ are you at and what course are you currently enrolled in?
Atul: I am enrolled at University of Minnesota, Duluth. in the computer science department for the MS course.
2. When did you give your gre and how did you prepare for it?
Atul: It is an interesting question I gave my GRE twice once in 2003 and once in 2006 both time I prepared while working, so my preparation was more of a part time effort and I did the best I could while working.
3. What do you think was your strong point in your application process?
Atul: hmm, I think my SOP was my strong point in the application process.
4. How important do you think is a good SOP and reco?
Atul: A lot, I dont have enough words to express the importance. I will say they determine ur admission. A good reco (read, from well known teachers or industry experts saying “good” and “true” things about you, no grandiloquent crap) can make up for a weak profile. An honest SOP can be a good factor to give additional credebility to your profile.
5. Can you tell us something about how you are financing yourself?
Atul: I am TAing at the Univ so I have full tution waiver and they pay me for my living.
