MIS vs MS - How is MIS different from MS?
We had a brief conversation with Sudipti Gupta who is pursuing Masters in Information Systems Management at Carnegie Mellon University currently. We talked to her about what MIS is all about, the career opportunities after it and what is the difference between an MIS and MS. Here is Sudipti with her views.
1. What course are engaged in right now and where?
Sudipti: Masters in Information Systems Management at Carnegie Mellon University
2. Why did you decide on MIS as your next move in your career after BTech in IT?
Sudipti: Didn’t want hardcore technical jobs, but more on management and consulting side.
3. How would you say a degree in MIS be different from an MS?
Sudipti: Very different. in MS CS focus is on in depth understanding of concepts, algorithms, how they are designed…MS CS is more geared towards academics and research while MIS courses are geared towards industry. You learn to apply a lot of useful techniques without understanding how it really works. MIS will have a breadth of technical and non-technical courses.
4. What sort of career opportunities do you see for yourself after you finish your degree?
Sudipti: Consulting, System/Business Analyst, Project Manager (if one has experience), System Architect, Developer/Programmer, QA engineer/analyst; software engineer
5. What would your advise be for students trying to get an MIS? which univs are good and what do they look for in the applications?
Sudipti: CMU, UC Berkley, Illinois, Michigan…Admission for MIS is much simpler compared to MSCS.

Hey what is the minimum job ex required ? can undergrads with good research profile app for MSIM , what are the chances?
Well in many cases you are a good with about 1-3 years of work ex - depending upon how much of an impact you had at your job - but if you have a good undergrad profile you can get thru with out any work ex.
Hi,
What is the prospect of MIS in US during this recession? I got 2+ yrs of Work Ex and got 1410 in GRE. But dont know its prospects and life @ post MIS.
Do suggest.
Well, in general if you are an MIS from a good US univ like CMU - then you should probably be able to land a good job at an software/IT company and/or a consultancy like Deloitte…there are endless possibilities and you are the master of you fate once you are here - good networking, good grades/courses and just general keeping your eyes and ears open is the best possible thing to do while you are there in the univ…
Okay a no brainer here, but how do u rate the chances of a fresh undergrad, as in with a good undergrad profile i am assuming good projects and some extra curricular activities and a fair amount of recommendations ought to do the job or are they looking for truly exceptional qualifications when looking for fresh undergrads as in IIT’s since i am from a private college, also is there a bottom limit to the GRE score as in they wont entertain you below a certain score, what would you suggest as to be the decent GRE score for applying for MIS
Thanks
Hi,
I’m a B.E. in I.T. and I’ve got a work ex of almost 2 years now and I plan to apply for the Fall 2009 session. I’ve scored 1210 on my GRE. Please suggest if there’s a point applying to universitites like Carnegie Mellon. If not, what should be the universities that I can consider “safe” for MIS.
Appreciate your help.
Thanks,
Piyush.

however - in short - try looking for MIS courses at CMU, Gatech, North Eastern, etc..CMU has one of the best MIS programs
Hi folks,
With the current market scenario is there any chance that the opportunities for MIS graduates will diminish?
Also I have got review from friends that even CS grads can into position like consultants or BA or PMs so does that mean choosing MIS is like narrowing down once scope ?
From the overall readings I get a feeling that MIS is considered somewhat inferior (may be this is not the correct word) ? Is this true?
I am not able to decide what should I opt for CS or MIS ?

hii i have given my GRE and TOEFL and met with an average score. I wanted to apply for MIS in US universities. I done have nay work exp. I just want to ask that is work exp really mandatory for MIS
Hi,
I am a bit confused in selecting the course which I should opt for MS. I want to be in the technical side and not much inclined to get into managerial side.
What are the job prospects after doing MS in CS and getting job here in India..and please highlight the same with MIS.
I am not able to decide what should I opt for CS or MIS ?
I have already got admits from two colleges for Spring 09 from California for MS in CS..but I deferred the admission for fall 09 and now I have an option to apply for some other colleges too..but m not sure should I apply for MS in CS, Software Engg or MIS or Information and Management.
@priyanka - yes - not having work experience can definitely put you at a disadvantage wrt other candidates who do have more work experience…coz nowadays most of the people applying for MIS have work experience so you would meet stiff competition applying without work ex…
@charul - these days there are tough times ahead for people in any industry - at such times - the people with most secure jobs are domain experts in technology - so in that sense doing an MS in CS seems more prudent as there should be more opporunities there. having said that, people get software jobs after MIS from a good institute as well - and the thing is that if you are interested in program manager kind of profiles - you can do that after MS in CS as well…
