MS in Management Science and Engineering - Dhruv Sampat
Not many people know about Masters in the area of Industrial engineering or as it is known in the US as Management Science and Engineering. Graduates from this field land up jobs at some of the most admired companies of the world like Goldman Sachs, Lehman Brothers, Google, Microsoft along with a host of start up companies. Dhruv Sampat just recently graduated with an MS in MS&E from Stanford. He shares some of his thoughts and his background with us here:

kaaledge: What is your background - i.e. - education in india - which college
and course?

DS: I did my Bachelor of Computer Engineering from Mumbai University at DJ Sanghvi College of Engineering. I worked as a Programmer Analyst at Tata Consultancy Services for a year after my Bachelors. I was working in the Internet Banking division on TCS’s Core Banking project for the State Bank of India.

kaaledge: why did you choose to do MS in MS&E ?

DS: While working as developer at TCS I did not find the job to be as intellectually stimulating as I would have liked it to be. Moreover while working in the banking domain though I was learning a lot from the domain perspective I felt I was being pigeon holed very early in my career. I did not want to remain a techie but neither did I know what else. Hence I felt MS&E was a very good program for me because it allowed me to explore various domains like finance, supply chain, operations research, process management, Marketing etc. It provided me with various frameworks and tools to analyze and solve different types of problems faced by technology companies. It gave me the platform to discover what I wanted to do

kaaledge: what univs in the US have a good MS&E Program?
DS: Cornell, Columbia, Stanford, Duke, Case Western, Berkeley (OR), Gatech(IE), Purdue(IE)

kaaledge: what job opportunities await MS&E graduates?
DS: Investment Banking Analyst
Management Consulting - Business analyst
Marketing Analyst
Trading
Product Manager for a tech company
Program Manager for a tech company
Business Process Management
